This edition challenged teams to propose a Gastronomic centre where now stands the Vicente Calderón Stadium, in Madrid, complementing the programme offered along the Madrid Rio Park - which already counts with sports, laisure and cultural facilities. The complex should house urban crops, a market, a business incubator for start-ups related to the gastronomic industry and any other complement for the neighbourhood, the park and the complex itself. That night all winning teams were asked to present their projects, and today I want to share with you our proposal.

Así es, el pasado martes 18 de noviembre se celebró en París la ceremonia de entrega de premios de la segunda edición del concurso internacional para estudiantes de arquitectura "II Campus Archizinc Contest" de arquitectura bioclimática, organizado por la empresa VMZinc, del grupo Umicore. ¡Y allí mi compañero Íñigo Lorente y yo, Clara Medina, fuimos laureados con el segundo premio! El orgullo fue doble, ya que, de 5 universidades europeas participantes, tanto el primer y el segundo premio fueron para equipos de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
En esta edición del concurso se pedía a los equipos plantear, en el lugar que actualmente ocupa el estadio Vicente Calderón de Madrid, un centro gastronómico que complementase el programa del proyecto Madrid Río, que ya cuenta con equipamientos deportivos, recreativos y culturales. El complejo debía contar con huertos urbanos, un mercado, un vivero de empresas relacionadas con la gastronomía y cualquier otro servicio asociado al barrio, al complejo y al propio programa del parque Madrid Río. En la ceremonia, cada equipo premiado hizo una breve presentación de su proyecto, y hoy me gustaría compartir nuestro proyecto también con vosotros.

Despite the temptation, we
tried a new approach to the task of a Gastronomic Centre in the
current Calderon Stadium trying to leave our imput and criteria for a
second stage. The idea was to allow the neighbours, the future public
and the site to spot out oportunities and to define the strategy of
our intervention. For that, we carried out a three-face analysis: a series of interviews both with local people and visitors, research for historic pictures of the building and its
construction and a field trip to experience the neighbourhood, the park and the
building.
Aunque la tentación era alta, intentamos un nuevo acercamiento al para nuestro proyecto, difiriendo nuestro juicio y criterios a una segunda etapa. La idea era dejar que los vecinos, el futuro público y el emplazamiento pusieran de manifiesto las oportunidades del programa y del lugar y definieran nuestra estrategia. Para ello desarrollamos un análisis a tres bandas: una serie de entrevistas tanto con vecinos como con visitantes, búsqueda de imágenes históricas del edificio y su construcción y una visita al lugar para experimentar el barrio, el parque y el edificio actual.
After this analysis, the
solution easyly took shape almost on its own. It was very important
for us to understand the building in order to adapt it for the new
needs in a way that users could even think that it had been built for
such purposes, instead of regarding it as a collage over the
remainings.
Después del análisis, la solución se forjó rápidamente casi por sí sola. Para nosotros fue muy importante entender el edificio actual para adaptarlo a los nuevos usos hasta el punto en el que los usuarios pudieran pensar que había sido construido nuevo para este propósito, y que no pareciera un simple collage sobre los restos del Vicente Calderón.
In
the end, our imput in the proposal were basically the elements that
would articulate the different requirements of the programme and the
strategies inspired by the analysis, as well as a general bioclimatic
concern at different scales.
Al final, nuestra aportación se reducía a los elementos que articularan las necesidades del programa y las estrategias inspiradas por el análisis y los criterios para un diseño bioclimático en las distintas escalas.
Beyond
a well urban-integrated proposal, we have paid great atention at the building design and its energy eficiency, with four singular
architectonic elements that will improve the climatic adaptation of
the project.
Más allá de la integración urbana, prestamos mucha atención al diseño del edificio y su eficiencia energética. Cuatro son los elementos arquitectónicos singulares que mejoran su adaptación climática a lo largo del día y del año.
And here we have them in action, giving our project the best bioclimatic response in summer and winter.
Y aquí están en acción, logrando una respuesta bioclimática optima tanto en verano como en invierno.
The south facade lattice was optimized acording to the solar chart for Madrid. Blue zone will be made with the VMZ photovoltaique decking system, and for the Green zone we use angle adjustable wooden blades.
Optimizamos la celosía de la fachada sur según la carta solar de Madrid. La zona azul está cubierta con el sistema VMZ de cubierta fotovoltaica, mientras que la zona verde cuenta con lamas de madera orientables.
We
also use VMZinc solutions for the north facade, with an innovative
use of the VMZ Z profile to obtain thermal-insulated blades for the
movable areas.
También usamos soluciones VMZinc en la fachada norte, con un uso innovador del perfil VMZ Z en las zonas practicables, consiguiendo lamas aislantes térmicamente.
